Halflings

Since the unification of the Kingdom, Halflings have called Novaria the land of opportunity.  Of the three main branches of Halflings, only the Hairfoot and Tallfellow have a sizeable population in Novaria, while most of their Stout brethren remained in the Hinlands.

Description
Stout hair is blonde to sandy red and eyes are of blue, grey or green. They tend to be a mite shorter and a bit more rotund than their Hairfoot relatives.

Origins
Only a few Stout halfling pioneers have crossed the River Bren to settle in Novaria. Those that are prefer settling in with Dwarves or in secluded, rural settlements of their own.

Views
Stout Halflings are more reserved than their Hairfoot or Tallfellow cousins. They reserve contact with humans for trade purposes as the Stout see most humans as boisterous troublemakers and condescending patronizers. Stout Halflings have little patience for the whimsical ways of Elves, but hold them with a sense of awe and mystery. Stouts prefer the company of Dwarves to that of other humanoid races since the Dwarves understand the value of hard work, a good pipe and strong ale. Stout relations with the other Halfling cultures are congenial, though they question the sensibility in city living or random roving. Among the Halflings, the Stout have the most animosity towards humanoids since the small Stout communities and singular dwellings are often viewed as easy pickings for Goblins, Orcs, Kobolds and others of their kind.

Culture
Stout halflings prefer to make their homes in sod-houses and burrows, though they will build with whatever resources are available in their area. Stout communities are either small villages consisting of no more than a dozen families or a vast area of farms and other self-sufficient dwellings. Stout communities are generally governed by a council of elders, which consists of both male and female councilors.

Like other Halfling cultures, males and females in Stout society are treated as equals. Both genders share domestic chores such as cooking, cleaning and child rearing as well as working in the fields and tending to the farms. A Stout Halfling couple will usually remain married for life after a brief courtship and with the families' permission. The couple will often set out to find property of their own, but usually not too far away from their families.

Stout Halflings usually dedicate a chapel to Yondalla, which often doubles as the cleric's home. These chapels also serve as a community meeting-hall. Other deities of the Halfling pantheon are usually venerated at shrines in the Halfling home. Clerics of these other deities usually function from within their own homes, making house calls as necessary.
