Description
The stereotypical Futhark is tall and burly with blonde hair and blue eyes. Though a great deal of Futhark conform to this stereotype, red and brown hair colors are common as well. Futhark eye color tends not to stray too far from the icy blue of the northern waters.  [Top]

Origins

During the period that the Danaans were settling the Clasbron region of Novaria, giants inhabited the Crystal Mountains and the region west of them, known as Artesia. When the Nostrian legions made their way into what would become Novaria, the presence of the giants in Artesia prevented Nostrian expansion up the coast. After the unification of Latinia and the Clasbron, this region was claimed by the new kingdom of Novaria though they could not maintain a military presence. When raiders from Vikland brought their scourge to Novaria, the King promised these lands to the Viking chieftains if they could subdue the giant population. When word reached Vikland that fertile land was being given away, many Vikings sailed to Novaria in order wrest the land away from the giants. In time, the descendants of these Vikings became the Futhark people and their chieftains, the Futhark Earls.  [Top]

Views
Being latecomers to Novaria, the Futhark still remain close to their Dwarven allies that aided their conquest of the giants. The Futhark have a healthy respect for Dwarven forgework and ale brewing, but it's Dwarven hardiness and skill in battle that receive the highest admiration from the Futhark. To the Futhark, the Latinians are a people made soft by luxury, wealth and privilege. Many Futhark have no use for the sort of affluence that is prevalent among the Latinians and view overt displays of wealth as an attempt to gain recognition not achieved on the battlefield. The Futhark have few problems with the Clasbron, seeing them as brothers-in-arms of a sort though they have a hard time understanding the position of the Druid in Clasbron society. For what little contact they have with Elves, the Futhark view them as flighty and a bit untrustworthy. One would be hard pressed, however, to find a Futhark who did not respect Elven archery skills and their grace with the sword. The Futhark are more patronizing than the other cultures and races to halflings, whom they believe are less than capable of defending themselves and give a hearty laugh at halfling attempts at bravery. The Futhark are not fond of the humanoid races to say the least. They barely tolerate them in the streets of their towns and cities, and there are many areas where humanoids are all but prohibited.

Though currently the Futhark earls favor King Tiel's reign, the Futhark middle class is concerned about Latinian ambitions in the gold and gem industry. Futhark commoners are also wary of the King's policy of leaving detachments of royal troops as well as humanoid mercenaries in the Futhark towns and cities. Since the beginning of Tiel's reign, the relationship between the Futhark earls and their Dwarven counterparts has been deteriorating with much of what used to be traded between the two societies finding itself locked away in Futhark storehouses.  [Top]

Culture
From birth, whether noble or common, the Futhark are taught to value bravery and combat prowess above all other virtues. These values are the building blocks that have ensured the Futhark a relatively autonomous existence, separate for the most part from day-to-day Novarian politics.  As a society the Futhark have proven quite capable of assimilating to the dominant culture of a region. Though they retain a strong sense of who they are as a people, the Futhark have adopted many Latinian customs. The Latinian tongue is more widely spoken than the Futhark tongue of their Viking ancestors and the Futhark have organized the worship of their deities.

In Futhark society, men and women are treated as equals. A Futhark woman may inherit and own land, fight alongside men and run business. This has lead to the preservation of the old Viking tradition of fostering where a child or children from one household may be raised in the home of another, usually a relative. A Futhark couple who has a child, yet wants to start or continue a career that keeps them from being home will often have their child fostered.

To the Futhark, religious gatherings are more for socializing than for pious worship. Though the Futhark honor and revere their gods, attendance at services is not mandatory. The Futhark view their relationship with their gods as a personal issue, a contract between the Futhark and their god where the Futhark exchanges worship and sacrifice in exchange for the gods' blessings.  [Top]
